Validation is a critical component which communicates "I care". It doesn't necessarily mean "I agree with you" or "you are right". It communicates "you matter". In a world of political correctness, we define trivial things as right versus wrong. This creates isolation and segregation with the "us" versus "them" mentality. We force people to pick sides based on their beliefs or ideals and judge them accordingly.

We are programmed to defend ourselves, our words, our actions instead of looking at how those words or actions affects others. Behind words spoken or actions taken are real human beings who are works in progress. No one is perfect and we can make the world a better place by extending grace to one another.

Validation acknowledges that "your feelings are real". It doesn't give us permission to judge those feelings or to tell that individual that they are not entitled to feel those emotions. We can begin by saying "I'm sorry you feel that way". Validation takes the wall down...
